It may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but my homemade stand up desk serves a purpose and didn't cost hundreds of pounds.
As a freelance Copywriter and Virtual Assistant, I now seem to spend most of my working day sitting, which is bad news for my fitness level and my weight. I'm no fitness freak (far from it), I could do with shedding a few pounds and I do get fed up sitting down all day, so I decided I needed a stand up desk. A bit of internet research soon told me what I didn't want to know - that a proper stand up desk could cost hundreds of pounds, even thousands if I wanted one with a treadmill attached. Not only that, but they take up a lot of space, space I don't have.
So, I figured I would have to compromise.
A little bit of thinking later, and with the addition of two brackets, an additional shelf and some screws and hinges, I, or rather my lovely dad, made a stand up desk out of my existing bookcase. The brackets and shelf came from IKEA, and the hinges and screws picked up for next to nothing at a hardware store. The whole lot cost less than £20 and does the job well enough.
