I've always been an office worker, but often, my job involved quite a bit of running around the office, up and down stairs, so sitting down for long periods of time was never really an problem. My previous job was the complete opposite – sitting down for practically 7 hours straight, and it really took a toll on my body, not to mention adding a few pounds!
Since then, I've seen quite a few articles and some TV programmes advocating the health benefits of standing up while working, and I have to say, as a copywriter, compelled to sit in front of a computer screen for hours on end, the idea is an attractive one. Posture (a big concern for me, I’m a natural slumper) is improved, and more calories are burned, just by standing rather than sitting.
So, lately I've been researching stand up desks, and it seems there’s quite a few out there, nor are they a new invention. Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Benjamin Franklin, it seems, all preferred to work standing up.
There are some static ‘tall’ desks available as well as ones that are adjustable, so it should be easy to find the perfect height. The thing is, I’m not going to be able to stand up all the time, - I’m far too lazy for that -, so I’m still going to need my ordinary desk and chair. The trick will be finding a happy medium, but it’s definitely a working situation I’m going to try and achieve.
